I just bought this book for a friend and I am also listening to it on audio. What a compelling story! Mitchell brings to life early NYC in a way I have rarely before felt. I feel the hum of the city and the workings of our early nation in my bones. The life of the press in all its striving and hope is at play here. This book showed me that the democratic process has always been fraught. It's also a book about the famous marriage of Mary Todd and Lincoln as I have never seen laid before. It's rich history that reads like a thriller. What a terrific book. Lincoln's civil war problems were more than military. He had to deal with a smorgasbord of hoaxes, writers using pseudonyms, and that pesky new media, the telegraph. I had no idea that he had to struggle with a challenging wife and legions of aggressive northern detractors, who cared little about slavery and whose primary interests were financial. Lincoln did what he had to do to confront in the 1800's version of fake news and conspiracies. Frankly, I was shocked that he abandoned the constitution when it looked like the country would really split in two. And I had no idea that Wall Street malfeasance was so central to the evolution of the Civil War.
